Reality television – good vs. evil??

Reality? television

We’ve all watched it in some form or fashion.  Reality T.V.  Biggest Loser, Jersey Shore, The Amazing Race, Survivor, American Idol, Horders, Addicted….the list goes on and on.  We watch because it is entertaining, but are all reality shows good for us?  Is it possible any of these shows might be harmful for us?  Imagine years from now they decide to make a new survivor type show where people are dropped  into an arena and must fight to stay alive.  Right now you might say, “That is horrible; I would never watch that!”, but is watching boyfriends and girlfriends cheat on each other or stabbing friends in the back really any different?  Are these shows morally right?

I am bringing this subject up because The Hunger Games is based on the premise of a world where reality television has taken a deadly turn.  Children are having to fight to stay alive and even having to kill other children in order to do so.  The government of this future world requires the games happen once a year, and people tune in every day to watch it take place.  “That could never happen”, you say?  How sure are you?  How far have we taken reality television presently, and how far do you think we will continue to be wiling to go?
